I’m a “non-traditional” college student (i.e., I’m in my late thirties), about to graduate with a BA in psychology. I do a lot of fiber/textile arts stuff: spinning and knitting, mostly, and recently I’ve picked up weaving. I’m a bookworm, a feminist, a liberal, a science geek, and a skeptic. In my past life I’ve been a writer, editor, and computer programmer. I live in central Florida, and have been a Floridian for most of my life.
I am a transgender man, although I reject the cultural stereotype of masculinity. My wife (blog pseudonum: The Valkyrie) is a transgender activist and I’m very proud of her. Her girlfriend (The Naiad) is also transgender. We’re all quite happy together.
I have schizoaffective disorder and OCD, and they make life a struggle sometimes. Like, it’s taking me seven years to get a four-year bachelor’s degree. I should graduate at the end of May. Keep your fingers crossed for me. I plan to go on to get my MSW degree in clinical social work, with the intention of counseling GSM folk who have mental illnesses.
My favorite colors are purple and olive drab. I don’t really like long walks on the beach or candlelight dinners. (I prefer forest trails and being able to see my food.) I prefer cats to dogs, and pie to cake. I would be lost without my iPhone. I don’t really like movies or TV, but I love reading non-fiction — usually weird histories or science books — and playing video games with my wife and her GF. I’ve been teaching myself math for years. (I never got to go beyond college algebra; my end goal is vector calculus. I’m on trigonometry right now. I have a looooooong way to go.)
Music is a big part of my life. I wish I could play an instrument or sing well, but instead I content myself with the music of others: Covenant, Nick Cave, Florence + the Machine, The Cure, Amanda Palmer, Bauhaus, Rammstein, KMFDM (up until the “Adios” album, anyway), Against Me!; 80’s alternative like The Smiths, the Violent Femmes, and R.E.M.; Johnny Cash, Max Richter, J.S. Bach, the Misfits (with Glenn Danzig, thank you), and most recently Steam Powered Giraffe. There’s a ton of other stuff. You may have noticed there’s not many female artists on that list. While there are lots of women in music that I like, I’m have an addiction to male baritone voices. I don’t think men make better music, I just enjoy deep voices a lot.
As I said, I read a lot. Some non-fiction authors I like are Mary Roach, Victoria Finlay, Bill Bryson, Kay Redfield Jameson, Simon Singh, and Richard Wiseman. Fiction writers: Neil Gaiman, Diana Rowland, Rudy Rucker, uh… I don’t read a lot of prose fiction, but I do love me some comic books. Matt Fraction’s HAWKEYE, ATOMIC ROBO, the most recent version of HERCULES, anything by Gail Simone. Lots of others, too.
Okay, shutting up now. If you’ve made it this far, I applaud you. I talk too damn much… Heh.
